nice ridge of high pressure is in control across the region for you. so not bad at all. so as we begin with a look at satellite and radar composite, we'll show you exactly where all that precipitation is now, because it's well off the coast, out of the way, and getting a bit of a break. take a look at this, ridge of high pressure in control. even in new york state, with all the tornado activity there, seeing much improvement here. a little bit of activity over areas of the mountains. we can't rule out maybe a spotty shower or so. but winds yesterday, peak gusts, 58 mile-per-hour wind gusts at reagan national airport, 47 at dulles, 35 at bwi marshall. winds anywhere from 39 to 52 miles per hour, a good indication of some of what our neighbors went through around the area with a result of that storm system yesterday. so yesterday there were a couple of funnel clouds that were spotted, but the national weather service has conducted three storm surveys in fairfax,
8:48 am
resten and lorton. so far, no evidence to show that a tornado was on the ground. so that is at least some good news there, even though i know there was a lot of damage in many areas. yesterday's high, 91 at national, same at dulles. 89 at bwi. and i want to tell you from the 3:00 to 4:00 hour when that front came through, significant drop in temperatures. at national airport, the temperature dropped some 17 degrees in an hour, 25 degrees it dropped at dulles. currently, we've got cool temperatures, 61 at gaithersburg. 63 at baltimore. 62 at dulles. we're feeling that fall chill out there. we're not alone. take a look at this, across areas of the dakotas, 36 degrees right now, unbelievable, 37 in areas of the northern plains. so that's a pretty good indication of the cooler air that's really settling in. we're going to get a gradual warmup as we move through the course of the week. northwesterly flow today, plenty of sunshine. ridge of high pressure in control. that's going to hold us into the
8:49 am
week. much cooler, but we'll see plenty of sunshine. by midday today, 76 degrees, sunny and pleasant. and our high today is going to be 77 degrees. light northwesterly winds, as i mentioned. and sunny skies, dry and cooler. by tonight, we'll have temperatures into the 50s. that's going to be pretty much everywhere. our accuweather seven-day forecast, look at this run of sunshine. not bad at all. there is a chance, however, that we could see a spotty shower once we get into the weekend, saturday, maybe sunday, because of another frontal system coming through. but the rest of the week looks absolutely fabulous. i can't reconcile out a spotty shower over the mountains today, to areas of our west. future cast wants to bring one here as well in the afternoon. really nothing to be too concerned with. temperatures, what a difference, though. actually starting out below seasonal. melanie? >> thanks so much, gwen. well, it is the day that redskins fans have all been waiting for. robert griffin iii will lace them up for real for the very
8:50 am
first time today. i can't imagine how that feels for him. the season kicks off with week 1 matchup against the saints. kevin and roch are here from 106.7 the fan. you brought your partner. >> didn't take long. >> i'm sorry. i'm slumming a little bit. [ laughter ] >> we love having you here. i like having both of you. >> [ laughter ] >> so we got the redskins against the saints. really sounds like the skins, as gm bruce allen said, go into a hornet's nest here. >> the pressure for robert griffin, iii today has to be the weight of the world. everybody in the dmv is watching him. now he's going into the superdome where the new orleans saints have gotten a boost from the appeals court and everything that's going on with the nfl. >> i disagree that there will be a lot of pressure on him. i think he'll go into the game calm, cool and collected and ready to get it out of the way for the first redskins game. >> shocker, he disagrees. >> what are keys the game here?
8:51 am
first, of course, let's talk about the offense. >> to me, it's going to be based on what kind of position that kyle shanahan puts him in. what's going to happen with the play calls come in for robert griffin, ii and the different looks he'll give? obviously we had a vanilla offense during the preseason, but it's based on what kyle puts him in in the situation. >> some of the things from the off season we've heard, lot of changes with the 2 and 3 tight end set. we'll see changes we haven't seen before in the preseason. and with the runningback situation, we'll see what happens with alfred morris, if he starts. >> do we know who the starters will be? >> it's going up to game time. >> i think somebody had said was roy sister. not quite sure yet. because of the injury situation, we want to see alfred morris. roch and i spoke with alfred morris. great gay. >> do you think that's a winning combination throughout the season? >> oh, yeah. if they use all their runningbacks, whoever is hot at the moment, go with that guy and hold on tight, i think we'll be in a good situation.
8:52 am
>> runningback by committee. >> i saw that! >> who do you feel like today? >> in a way, that's good, because you're not solely reliant on just one person. >> thent other team doesn't know who to game plan for. that's also okay. >> right. let's talk defense. i've read that we got some holes there. >> yeah, or like the whole defense-- >> whole defense! [ laughter ] >> there are some questions about the defensive backs, okay. >> right. >> i'm not allowed to speak on that. >> but there is a guy back there-- >> why are you not allowed to speak on that? >> he's -- merry weather and jackson are not going to be playing. jackson forever and merriweather until he comes back from injury. until we fill the gaps in the secondary, we're worried about drew brees throwing for 10,000 yards. >> because he could probably do it. [ laughter ] >> and the problem is, we're put in a situation again right off the bat the guy he spoke of is put into a situation that he has to start. and the guy he was speaking of is a guy i don't really trust.
8:53 am
[ laughter ] >> i was excited about the day till he brought that guy up. >> i'm sorry to bring that up. but i mean, this is going to be tough. you're going up against drew brees. >> but the front seven, arrack poe, kerrigan, the way our linebackers have been playing, that we saw them in the preseason, this front seven is going to put a lot of pressure on drew brees. they already have a lot of pressure on them now with no head coach and no interim coach. they are like in their third string. >> so we asked you guys to put in some of your picks. do you know what each other picked already? >> i don't know what he picked. >> he was yelling at me yesterday! [ laughter ] >> we start with roch first. game pick, season record pick, and, i know it's far out, but super bowl pick. >> here's the thing. i asked kevin his picks yesterday. and he's the sunny engineeringson of our show. it's always redskins no matter what. i'll let him tell you. i picked 9-7 this season. >> and you thought today would
8:54 am
be the saints? >> yes. no, no, actually, yes, i did think it's saints over redskins today. i'm a realist. i think it's going to be a tight game. i'm not going to predict a score. i think it could be anywhere between 3 and 7 points though. >> you say you're a realist, yet you have them at 9-7 on the season. >> because the first couple of games, people don't know what we're doing, we don't know what they are doing, so there's a situation we could come out and surprise them. >> let's quickly put up kevin's picks and then talk about the super bowl teams. >> i actually went through the schedule and tried to pick games we could win. i didn't throw out a number. i got down to if we can win 7 games, i think there's a game in december we play cleveland i'm hoping we can win in the nfc east, if we can win one of those, we get to 7. hopefully we can win all of those. >> but are the skins going to win today? >> i have the skins today. >> i don't understand that. >> i think the saints, and i'm just optimistic here, i think the saints are a team that can be beat. i think, especially early in the
8:55 am
season. late in the season, they get better. early in the season, with the head coach situation they have, with peyton being gone, i think they are a little off. >> i hope you're right, because that would be a great confidence builder for our team. >> it would. >> just a couple of seconds left. tell me about your event this afternoon. >> this morning we'll be playing at the greater month naz baseball field in month naz for timmy tyrel. he has a kick ball tournament. roch and i will both be out there. this young man has been going around the country raising money for cancer. 7 years old, already made more appearances on cnn, 60 minutes-- >> we get to hit the kids as hard as we want! [ laughter ] >> are you wearing your-- >> i like to represent breast cancer, i'll put on pink whenever possible. could you have your producer put a prettier picture of us up? [ laughter ] >> we'll take a snapshot here. >> all right. kevin and roch show on 106.7 the fan, thank you for joining us. >> no profnlt. and you can catch all the action today right here on fox
